Tram systems in Gold Coast
Gold Coast is is a coastal city in the Australian state of Queensland, and Australia's sixth-most populous city. The city is located about 66km south of Brisbane, the state capital and is a major tourist destination with a large number of surfing beaches.
Gold Coast is served by two airports, Gold Coast Airport is located in the suburb of Bilinga and Brisbane Airport is only a one hour drive away. Both airports cater for domestic and international traffic.
Gold Coast is also part of Brisbane's CityTrain and is connected to the city by an interurban Gold Coast railway line. The city is also served by a network of bus lines operated by Surfside Buslines, with services operating between 05:00 and midnight during the week and some routes operating 24-hour services on Friday and Saturday. The area is also served by the G:link light rail system, which is described below.
Gold Coast's G:link light rail system is a 20km long light rail line that currently operates between Helensvale and Broadbeach South. The line provides a rapid transport system to the suburbs of Broadbeach, Surfers Paradise, Main Beach, Southport, Parkwood and Helensvale. Development is underway for a further 6.5km extension of the line south to Burleigh Heads, which was due to commence construction in 2020, but was delayed due to funding disputes among the three levels of government and the COVID-19 pandemic. Construction eventually commenced in 2023 and the extended line is expected to be operational by 2026.
There are also plans for a further extension south to Coolangatta, which will not take place until the extension to Burleigh Heads is completed. Longer term, a potential light rail corridor has also been identified from the Airport to Coolangatta and will be preserved for possible future expansion.
